Ever thought of yourself as a bit of a Rankin or a Spielberg? While video and photos can now be edited on nearly every machine you would buy (helped with Apple or Microsoft's bundled software) if you are planning to do more complex edits then more complex software - Adobe's Creative Suite, Pro Tools and Final Cut are good examples - will need to be purchased.

Laptops can be power hungry

Because of the strain put on laptops from rendering video and large image files, computers need a lot of memory and large hard drives. One minute of high definition video can take 1GB of disc drive space and image file sizes are growing exponentially.

Here a few things to look for:

Memory - The bigger the better. 4GB should be fine the moment but a new wave of machines with larger ram capacity is expected in the near future.

Graphics - Important for editing images and video. A dedicated graphics card (with its own memory) is becoming a necessity if you want to undertake this sort of work, ranging from 128MB to 1GB. This decision has to be influenced by your budget.

Ports - If you're using a lot of complex machinery - cameras, musical instruments etc - then you need to make sure that it will connect to your laptop without much trouble.

Standard connections should be three or four USB ports (preferably USB 3.0 though this is very new technology) and it could be the case that you need a Firewire port. Laptop manufacturers often choose to exclude this port.

Fan - If you are recording music using your laptop then does it need to be silent? There are a number of almost silent fans on the market but are quite expensive.

It is also the case that modifications to this part of the laptop can be difficult so if you require a silent machine then it may be best to consult a specialist music supplier.

Laptop technology is increasingly moving towards the portable end of the market and battery life of new laptops, where once a 3hr stint without a charge was considered revolutionary, is pushing towards and even exceeding 10 hours - although this can be hard to achieve.

Here a few things to look for:

Weight - Weight is all important. As a rule, the lighter it is the more expensive it will be. Ideally, choose a laptop with a weight around 2kg or less. Any more and that laptop bag will start getting uncomfortably heavy.

Battery life - Chances are that you will be away from a plug socket for long periods of time. If you're out on the road all day then a battery life of eight hours would be ideal but very few laptops offer that.

Around 4/5 hours is around the industry standard for mid-range light laptops, however laptops advertising a 12-hour battery life are now on sale, though many reviewers have said this claim is still optimistic.

Size - If you are travelling then screen size is a compromise you may have to make. Average sizes are around 13 inches but can be as small as 10.

If you are not doing complex tasks or wanting to watch DVDs then a netbook might be best. They have smaller memories and longer battery life. The thinnest laptops can be under 3cm in width but really you should aim at no more than 4cm.

Optical drives - or the lack of them. Many "ultraportables" - as they are known - have not included a disc drive to cut down on weight and width.

If you intend to watch DVDs and aren't comfortable, or do not have sufficient free disc space, with them on your hard drive then an optical drive is a necessity.

Hard drive - If there is no internal optical drive then the hard drive needs to be larger to incorporate items that you might have kept on DVD. Around 160GB could be plenty if you don't have a large media library.

If you want to hoard every film made in Los Angeles then the sky is the limit (though most portables don't go much about 320GB).

The Cortex-A15, the latest mobile processor designed by ARM

Inside your smartphone, a battle is raging. As tiny chips with big ambitions fight for processing power, is there anything the phones of the future will not be able to do?

High-definition TV and ultra-complex gaming - all in 3D - is a big task for any computer.

Especially as it tries to calculate the way the shadows should behave, or the way the light should reflect off each of the two million pixels on screen, 50 times a second.

Such complex graphics on home computers have only become possible in the last few years, as chip technology has caught up with designers' aspirations.

But in the future, mobile phones will be able to handle this and much more - thanks to the prototype chips being designed by one of the most quietly successful and profitable companies in IT - ARM.

ARM does not manufacture chips but rather designs them for other people to make.

Around 95% of the world's smartphones have an ARM chip inside and, although the company does not discuss its customers, it is widely believed that there is even an ARM chip inside Apple's iPad.

ARM designs are so popular with mobile manufacturers because of their low power consumption.

Whereas a home computer can draw more electricity from the mains when it needs to do something complicated, mobile devices need to manage their power consumption carefully, lest they suck their tiny batteries dry.

Snapdragon silicon

ARM's director of marketing, Laurence Bryant, says it is something that ARM, with its Reduced Instruction Set Computing, has specialised in for 20 years.

"In the mobile world, the primary driver has always been about low power and this seems to be taking the biggest traction in the industry right now.

"Once you have got that low power you can create low-cost and small form factors. You can have smaller batteries and you can be innovative with your form factor and your industrial design.

"As the manufacturing process in which chips are made has changed, we have been able to pack more and more performance into the same piece of silicon."

So much performance, in fact, that you will now find ARM inside bigger more powerful devices - tablet computers, e-readers and even netbook-style devices.

One of the best-known chips based on the architecture that ARM licenses to manufacturers is technology company Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor.

At Qualcomm's recent iQ showcase, prototype phones were sporting a new graphics processing unit, giving them graphical oomph to rival a desktop machine - running a 3D game, showing four HD videos at once and rendering real-time mapping applications with 3D graphics.

Intel is the world's biggest chip maker - open a PC and there is a very good chance that you will find, to coin its own marketing slogan, Intel inside.

But there is not a single smartphone in the world that has the same credentials. So why not? After all, Intel do have a low-power chip, the Atom, which is widely used in netbooks.

Heavily-armed market

Ian Fogg of Forrester Research explains that Intel have had limited success pushing the Atom into smaller devices.

"Part of the problem is, they are coming from the PC market and they are having to design something that is super efficient.

"There are already established players in mobile and having completely different technology means a company does not just have to change the processor, but they have to change other parts of their product that tie in to the processor.

"It is quite a big decision for a company to switch away from ARM technology to something very different."

The chip Intel is hoping to break into the smartphone market with is a version of the Atom - codenamed Moorestown and laden with amazing claims about power efficiency and performance.

But so far, there has only been one smartphone demo with the Moorestown chipset inside and soon after its unveiling at consumer technology tradeshow CES in January, its development was halted.

Speaking at the show, Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini did not seem convinced that smartphones were the future at all.

"I think a lot of the growth is going to be mobile, in all form factors. It is way too early to decide which form factor is going to win - the laptop, the netbook, the smartphone. For the foreseeable future they are all going to thrive."

Intel argues that since we will expect a full PC experience from tomorrow's mobile devices, it makes sense to have the same make of chips in both, to ensure full compatibility.

That is why it says its Moorestown smartphones, now scheduled for 2011, are the sensible choice of architecture.

But with Nokia launching its latest ARM-powered devices this week, and Samsung announcing its first dual core ARM processor for smartphones and tablets, Intel may well find it difficult to force its way into an already heavily armed market.

چند توصیه مهم برای کسانی که ساعات طولانی از رایانه استفاده می کنند

اگر بیش از دو ساعت در روز از رایانه استفاده می کنید، احتمال دارد که به «سندرم بینایی رایانه ای» مبتلا باشید.

دکتر جنیفر آشتون پژوهشگر و متخصص کانادایی در این باره گفت: سندرم بینایی رایانه ای یا«CVS» شامل علائمی است که در پی استفاده طولانی مدت از رایانه و ابزار الکترونیکی دستی، iphoneها و ipodforها در طول روز و به طور مکرر بروز می کنند.

به گزارش شبکه خبری سی بی اس نیوز، مهمترین علائم این سندرم عبارت از خستگی چشم، خشکی و تحریک پذیری چشم، خستگی عمومی بدن و سردردهای مکرر هستند.

در این مقاله، دکتر آشتون چند راه کار مفید برای بهبود و کاهش خستگی چشمی در مبتلایان به این سندرم ارائه کرده است.

وی توصیه می کند؛ کسانی که ساعات طولانی جلوی رایانه می نشینند باید پلک بزنند با این کار اشکها در چشم جریان پیدا می کنند و نه تنها از خشکی چشم جلوگیری می کند بلکه اشکها به طور طبیعی خاصیت درمانی دارند.

توصیه دوم؛ استفاده از قانون ۲۰/۲۰/۲۰ است. به این معنی که هر ۲۰ دقیقه ۲۰ ثانیه به نقطه ای در مسافت ۲۰ فوتی خیره شوید تا چشهمایتان استراحت کنند.

نکته سوم؛ اطمینان از وجود نور مناسب در محیط است. بهتر است نور مناسب از بالای سر و در محدوده میز کار بتابد و نباید به خود فرد بتابد. همچنین باید صفحه مونیتور را طوری قرار دهید که نور پنجره یا چراغ از آن منعکس نشود.

در پایان نیز تاکید می شود که موقعیت مناسب قرار دادن مونتیور، ۱۵ تا ۲۰ درجه پایین تر از سطح چشمهاست که ۲۰ تا ۲۸ اینچ هم باید از چشم ها فاصله داشته باشد.

طب سوزنی به تحمل ورزش کمک می کند

بیماران قلبی که طب سوزنی می شوند در مقایسه با کسانی که تحت این درمان قرار نمی گیرند در پیاده روی مسافت بیشتری را می توانند طی کنند.

 

علاوه بر این محققان در بیمارستان دانشگاهی “هیدلبرگ” در آلمان دریافتند: بیمارانی که طب سوزنی می شدند سریعتر بهبود می یافتند و کمتر احساس خستگی و فرسودگی می کردند.

با این وجود محققان گزارش دادند که طب سوزنی تاثیری در توانایی کاریی قابل اندازه گیری قلب نداشت.

در این مطالعه آزمایشی بالینی که در مجله “قلب” ( Heart) منتشر شده است بیماران مبتلا به نارسایی قلب که داروهای متعارف مصرف می کردند و در شرایط ثابت تحت طب سوزنی قرار می گرفتند با گروه کنترل که به آنها سوزن های دارونمایی زده می شد که وارد پوست نمی شدند ، مقایسه شد.

بر اساس طب سنتی چین طب سوزنی موجب افزایش قدرت عمومی بدن می شود.

دکتر “آرنت کریستن” همکار نویسنده این مطالعه در بیانیه ای اعلام کرد، سطح خون یک پیام رسان خاص — تومور نکروز فاکتور آلفا — معمولا پس از درمان با طب سوزنی واقعی افت می کند.

وی افزود: از آنجاییکه تومور نکروز فاکتور آلفا از جمله عواملی است کهبه کاهش حجم عضلانی و قدرت عضلانی منجر می شود می تواند این اثر مثبت بر عملکرد عضله اسکلتی را توضیح دهد.
